User-based access management
It is necessary to create users in UserGate in order to provide Internet access and calculate traffic for each user. A ‘user’ can be one or several computers that meet certain criteria, for example, an IP address or login and password.

When connecting to UserGate and getting access to the Internet, users are authorized through one of the following methods:
- Authorization by IP address (or IP address range)
- Authorization by MAC address
- Authorization by an IP and MAC combination
- HTTP authorization
- Login and password authorization
- Windows Login authorization
- Active Directory authorization
- Simplified version of Active Directory authorization
Active Directory support lets you use centrally stored user information to ensure that all changes are automatically reflected in UserGate. Also, instead of requiring each user to be entered manually, UserGate can import users from an Active Directory, making it extremely simple to set up user connections.
